Game Design
While reading the first article I found out at how hard it can be to actually give a definition to a game and that if you tried make a definition of yourself that it can be as the article says"Imperfect". Although it is hard we do know what is in a game such as it says in the first article "rules, story, action" while this is true it can also contain horror, drama and many other topics. While reading further on the the Reading One article I found at how you compare games to other games in the industry like for example you could compare Call Of Duty to Battlefield and so on. From reading the article I found it interesting on how simple it is actually to make a game which I created myself on a piece of paper that took less then fifteen minutes. You really think it's hard to make a game until it can be done rather simply even if it is a basic game. What I also found very interesting was the Games Defined section of the reading where it says" Games are a "form of art in which the participants, termed players, make decisions in order to manage resources through game tokens in the pursuit of a goal"". This made sense to me as I recently only started playing 'Cyberpunk 2077' which is a lot of decisions to be made in the game.
Monopoly by Hasbro GamesWhile reading the second article on 'The Organic Nature Of Game Ideation' I found it very interesting on the interview they did in the years 2005 and 2007 on twenty three game professionals from eight different Finnish game companies. As while reading what they had to say on idea generation as one of the questions that was asked was "Is it easy for you?". The response that they got was "Even though its easy to come up with game ideas, it is not very easy to come up with good ideas". This shows at how hard it can be to come up with a good game idea and for it actually to work as well. While some of the game professionals talked on how they keep themselves inspired one said "he subscribes to National Geographic in order to keep himself inspired." While reading on I seen at how people though of good ideas and that some thought every idea is good but that it just has to be worked. As I read on further I found a piece that said "Good ideas were seen as inspiring for others to immediately build on top of them".
In the third article it talks about on how there are no books or courses on how to generate ideas and the author talks of four techniques that you can use to create ideas. The first being Concentration and everyone is able to do this but it is what the person does with their concentration and that how if your in the same environment every day you'll come up with the same ideas while if you change it up you'll think outside the box. Brainstorming is the second technique this is probably very common on wherever you go whether that'd be developing a game or developing a tv show. All you've to do is break people into groups and give them a direction to go in for example a football game and then they go off and come up with ideas, then they collect the ideas and choose which they feel is best. The third technique is Scamper here this is when you change something in your project and see if it turns out differently and then you can combine two genres like a film such as adding a comedy to a horror making a comedy horror. The final technique is The Ramsey Method which has two important methods the information collected and if this information is used correctly.

Hey Sam, really enjoyed reading your thoughts on these articles. Thats cool that you managed to make a game on paper in 15 minutes! I should really try doing that myself when brainstorming for my game project. What do you think of Cyberpunk 2077? It was a game I was planning on playing when it came out last year but when I saw the amount of bugs and problems I decided against it. Look forward to reading your opinions on future articles!
ReplyDeleteHello Sam, I thought the method about making a game in 15 minutes was great and really showed how easy it can be to come up with a game idea and create one it made it feel less intimidating and more fun if anything so I am glad we got to do that as it taught us a great lesson on game design and the concept of it in terms of the difficulty scale. It doesn't always have to be so complicated and can be something simple but effective.
ReplyDeleteHey Sam, It was great to read your take on the readings. You were able to describe it in a way easier way than when I was reading it at the time so thanks for that. The 15 minute game really opened my eyes to how easy it can be to create a game but as you said yourself it's easy to create a game but is it easy to create a good game? I guess we will find out when we start making our own.
